Question 1 of 8

Over the past month, how often have you had a sensation of not emptying your bladder completely after you finished urinating?

What is the IPSS / AUA Symptom Score?

The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), also called the AUA Symptom Index, is the standard 7-question tool urologists use to quantify urinary symptoms from BPH (enlarged prostate). Each question scores 0–5 based on frequency of the symptom over the past month, for a total of 0–35. Scores of 0–7 are mild, 8–19 moderate, and 20–35 severe — read the full IPSS score guide for what each band means for treatment decisions, or take the full ManCore men's health quiz for a broader picture beyond urinary symptoms alone.

ScoreSeverityWhat it usually means
0–7MildWatchful waiting with lifestyle changes is usually reasonable.
8–19ModerateMost men start discussing medication with a urologist.
20–35SevereWarrants a full urology evaluation without delay.

When to See a Urologist

See a urologist if your IPSS score is 8 or higher, if your score has risen 3 or more points since your last check, or if you notice blood in your urine. Seek immediate care for sudden inability to urinate, fever with urinary symptoms, or severe pelvic pain.
